It is with sadness that we learnt of the death of Malcolm Fraser.
Mr Fraser had long been a prominent voice in public debate in Australia on issues relating to migration and human rights.
As Prime Minister, he also did much to strengthen trans-Tasman relations. It was under his government that the groundwork was laid for Closer Economic Relations. This transformed the Australia-New Zealand relationship and formed the basis for all subsequent economic integration. It showed a boldness of vision that has rarely been seen in trans-Tasman matters ever since.
