Andrew was elected as Member for Scullin in 2013. He is a strong believer in the value of community and a passionate advocate for Melbourne’s north. Andrew has served as Shadow Assistant Minister for Schools since 2016.
In this role he has focussed on Labor’s policies for students with disability, rural and regional schools and vocational education in high school. In addition to education, Andrew’s policy interests include cities, the future of work, climate change, immigration and social policy.
He has contributed to public debate, as well as policy formulation on these issues and on improving the health of our democracy. Prior to his election, Andrew worked as an employment lawyer at Slater & Gordon, where he helped people uphold their rights at work and resolve the issues they face in their workplace.
Statement from Andrew Giles
“I am determined as a politician to remove discrimination wherever it is found, and am deeply concerned at the barriers which are presently before so many New Zealand born Australians. Questions of accessing higher education, and social supports are especially important to me, and to Labor.
I’m very proud to represent many in the Oz Kiwi family, and in the debt of the Oz Kiwi organisation, who have worked so effectively not just to highlight injustice but to identify policy solutions.
I hope we can make these changes after this important election.”
